“Throughout my academic journey, I encountered and surmounted numerous challenges, including medical issues, managing my time effectively, and adjusting to online classes during the pandemic. One of the most significant hurdles was striking a financial balance that allowed me to attend school full-time without needing to work full-time simultaneously.
Remaining engaged with my peers through organizations such as 10,000 Degrees was instrumental in maintaining my focus on my goals, particularly during the pandemic. My drive to finish my studies stemmed from the daily opportunities I participated in, such as undergraduate research, MESA, and community involvement.
One of the ways I influence my extended family, friends, and community is by emphasizing that it’s never too late to go back to school and learn, or to start pursuing a passion. My biggest impact is on my daughters by showing them through my example that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
I aim to establish a non-profit that assists low-income individuals, including women and men, who wish to pursue further education.
I actively participate in community efforts advocating for equity through environmental justice, land planning, and human rights movements.
I started college journey for financial stability but it has become more than that. My education has been a rewarding and empowering experience. The best heritage you can leave your kids is an education.
A 10,000 Degrees moment that really stood out to me was when I realized I can be ONE degree too.”
