Evergreen Valley College Hosts 10,000 Degrees ‘College Opportunities Summit,’A Free College Success Program For High School Seniors

The Free One-Day In-Person Program Created By Bay Area Nonprofit 10,000 Degrees Prepares High School Seniors From Low-Income Backgrounds For College Success

San Rafael, Calif. (July 18, 2023) – 10,000 Degrees, an organization dedicated to empowering students to enter and graduate college in Santa Clara and seven other Bay Area counties, will hold its annual ‘College Opportunities Summit’ on Thursday, July 27 at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose.

The ‘College Opportunities Summit’ is a one-day in-person college success program that focuses on preparing college-bound high school students, from low-income backgrounds, for their senior year of high school and postsecondary education. The 10,000 Degrees ‘College Opportunities Summit’ at Evergreen Valley College is part of a summer series that 10,000 Degrees is holding at six partner colleges across the Bay Area.

“10,000 Degrees’ resources and programs, such as the ‘College Opportunities Summit’ have helped thousands of Bay Area students prepare for college,” said Maria Hernandez, director of curriculum and engagement at 10,000 Degrees. “For many high school students, especially low-income and first-generation students, preparing for college is not easy. The ‘College Opportunities Summit’ was designed to help students tackle college-related concerns, understand the college admissions process, and gain the necessary tools to enter and successfully complete college.”

At the 10,000 Degrees ‘College Opportunities Summit,’ students will have the opportunity to participate in the following workshops and activities led by 10,000 Degrees staff and recent college graduates:

  • Why College Is Right For You: understanding major vs. career
  • College Exploration: research and discover college pathways, learn about different college systems and degrees, and build a college list
  • Q&A Panel: students will hear the journeys and lessons of current college students and recent local graduates 10,000 Degrees to hold ‘College Opportunities Summit’ on Thursday, July 27 at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose
  • College Resources: students will learn about various college resources through interactive activities and campus organizations
  • Senior Year Roadmap: students will learn how 10,000 Degrees can support students in their senior year, receive a FAFSA/CADA and scholarship overview, and learn about important dates in the college application process
  • Campus tour of Evergreen Valley College

The 10,000 Degrees ‘College Opportunities Summit’ will include the participation of panelists from Equinix, Excite Credit Union, Edily, Shortino Family Foundation, San Jose State University, and Yerba Buena High School.
