Over $100,000 raised to support students from first-generation and low-income college backgrounds
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.— Over the last four weeks, 10,000 Degrees hosted a series of ‘Hoop For Change’ events around the Bay Area, all to benefit students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds. In San Rafael, one of the four fundraisers they hosted, local students and community members participated in a free-throw shoot-a-thon with First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom. This year alone, ‘Hoop For Change’ welcomed 148 total participants, and raised over $100,000 for 10,000 Degrees students.
10,000 Degrees launched ‘Hoop For Change’ in 2024. This year, the program returned to Walnut Creek, San Rafael, as well as two new cities, Lafayette and San Francisco, to host friendly free-throw competitions in local communities. Since the inception of the program, 10,000 Degrees has collaborated with multiple schools and community partners, resulting in double the number of event participants this year and nearly triple last year’s fundraising goal.
The community-wide ‘Hoop for Change’ invited players to collect pledges and donations for every free-throw made, with all proceeds supporting 10,000 Degrees programs that help students from low-income backgrounds get to and through college. ‘Hoop for Change’ showcased how local student-athletes turned their passion for basketball into a positive impact beyond the court for educational equity.
