Money Matters: Budgeting for College at Andrew P. Hill High School

10,000 Degrees Hosts ‘Money Matters: Budgeting for College’: An Interactive Financial Literacy Workshop for Students at Andrew P. Hill High School

Santa Jose, Calif. (April 29, 2026)10,000 Degrees, a California-based nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunities for students from low-income backgrounds to access a quality college education and achieve career success, will host ‘Money Matters’ for high school junior students at Andrew P. Hill High School on Wednesday, April 29, and Thursday, April 30. ‘Money Matters’ is an interactive financial aid literacy curriculum designed by 10,000 Degrees, and this workshop is part of a series that the organization is hosting at partner schools throughout the academic year.

The ‘Money Matters’ workshops are designed to give students a clear, practical understanding of how to navigate the cost of college and make informed financial decisions. Through hands-on activities, students explore how financial aid can significantly reduce the cost of attendance and make post-secondary education attainable. Each student works through a portfolio that includes a sample financial aid offer, helping them compare different college pathways and understand the real impact of grants, scholarships, and out-of-pocket costs.

Approximately 350 Andrew Hill students will participate in the workshops. They will work with hypothetical budgets and pricing options for college-related expenses, including books, transportation, computer, and housing. As they rotate through nine stations facilitated by 10,000 Degrees staff and volunteers, students will face realistic budgeting decisions, including being encouraged to spend on products and services they may not need. The goal is for students to leave with a stronger understanding of their college financial aid options and the confidence that post-secondary education can be affordable.

‘Money Matters’ Objectives:

  1. Students learn that college can be possible and affordable by accessing free financial aid and making thoughtful and informed spending choices.
  2. Students build advocacy skills by identifying steps to access additional financial resources.
  3. Students learn the importance of submitting a financial aid application (FAFSA/CADAA).
  4. Students gain a clearer picture of college costs and how financial aid reduces out-of-pocket costs.
  5. Students begin building relationships with 10,000 Degrees staff and learn about available programs, services, and resources.
  6. Students receive information about 10,000 Degrees scholarships.
