In Challenging Times: Finding Hope and Staying Steadfast

June 25, 2025

There are no words to adequately describe how extraordinarily difficult and deeply painful this time has been for so many, especially for our immigrant community. What happened in Los Angeles and what continues to happen across our local communities and the country is simply wrong. Our communities are being terrorized—people have been injured and lives will continue to be at great risk. The fear and traumatizing stress is real and there is no minimizing what lies ahead.

But at 10,000 Degrees, we refuse to be paralyzed by fear. Our young people are our future. They are full of amazing potential and dreams of a more loving, just, and equitable world. And we’re standing by them. They are working hard to become teachers, scientists, nurses and doctors, civic leaders, economists, lawyers, innovators, and more—all to ensure that we have healthy communities and places to live and thrive—a future for all.

Last week, in deep contrast to the attack on our communities, I had the honor to be in conversation with Dr. John B. King, former United States Secretary of Education under President Obama, who was at Book Passage in Corte Madera to discuss his new book, Teacher to Teacher. Dr. King is a remarkable man, teacher, and leader, and has devoted his entire career to every young person in our country, regardless of their background.

I was reminded of our most important work in this country—to listen with care and to love humankind—to invest in our people and teachers who are on the front lines guiding our students to be the best of who they are, despite the challenges and trauma they face everyday. We must believe in every young person and hold them, most of all in times they feel like giving up. This is our work. Especially now. Dr. King’s new book is a powerful memoir and love letter to teachers, and a breathtaking story of deep cultural connection. And it’s a hopeful antidote to our current times and I believe a must-read for us all.

We remain steadfast in our mission. We will continue to support our staff, students and families, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background. And we will continue to proceed with vigor towards a more just and equitable world.

In community,
