I was very fortunate because both my parents went to college so they could guide me through the college process, through applications, visiting colleges, what would be a good fit for me, and what questions to ask, especially about financial aid. I now know how instrumental that was for me being successful. My parents had to figure everything out on their own, so education has always been really important in our family.
Access to educational opportunity is not available to everyone, especially low-income students of color. My dad has worked with 100 Black Men since I was a kid and 10,000 Degrees has administered their scholarship for many years. We love that 10,000 Degrees is making an impact in students’ lives.
10,000 Degrees believes it’s never too early to start learning about financial literacy: student loans, financial aid and the financial implications of college. This is why I joined the Sonoma Advisory board. Sonoma County is my home and I will use my resources and contacts to help students through college. You can’t advocate for rights you don’t know about. Education leads to knowledge which leads to more control and power in your life.
