Education is an essential tool to bring about change in the world, as it provides me with a voice that has the potential to not only shed light on things that I believe need to be addressed, but also make decisions that can positively impact those whom I care deeply about.
Like most first-generation students, I knew little about higher education and how to navigate the process. I did not have anybody to turn to at home, which is why I sought out help at school. Thankfully, 10,000 Degrees provided continued support during the application process starting from high school. Following the community college path, 10,000 Degrees also played a role in transferring— they facilitated the daunting process of enrolling in a UC to maintain my career goals within reach. Once at my 4 year institution, I was paired up with a fellow who was always willing to clear my doubts, or to simply listen. She connected me to many resources that had potential to enhance my academic and career outlook. 10,000 Degrees became one of my support systems outside of home.
My parents immigrated to the US for me to have access to a remarkable education and the opportunities that come with it. The sacrifices my family made fuel me to keep pushing and pursue a healthcare profession. My goal is to give back to the community that adopted me and welcomed me with open arms, and my community back home where I grew up, who despite the distance remains supportive and proud of my achievements as a student and growth as a person.
