Growing up, I never thought I could afford to go to college, especially a great school like UC Davis. Loans were terrifying. Thankfully, through programs like 10,000 Degrees, I not only received financial support but, more importantly, educational resources and career support that greatly helped me take on the challenges that first-generation, low-income students have to struggle through.
10,000 Degrees has been an amazing opportunity. It’s how I found my first big internship last summer—they even flew me out to Boston! Being in community with other 10,000 Degrees students during check-in meetings was really supportive. I realized that the financial burden is just one aspect, and 10,000 Degrees has really broadened that support, from tutoring to [my Fellow] Madison’s helpful biweekly emails. They’re really the reason why I’m able to graduate.
As the oldest of my siblings, my college experience is shared by my mom and younger sibling. My mom, in awe and hope, told me how incredible it was that I’m getting the opportunity to live independently. This has truly convinced me to be ambitious in life. Getting an education is so important because I felt like I needed to find a way to further myself in life beyond what my parents have. My goal is to live a fulfilling life by serving and positively impacting others. I plan on pursuing a career in healthcare to create a positive effect on many families.
