“Being the very first in my family to attend college was challenging because I felt like I could not ask my family questions about school. Having to support myself financially was another obstacle, forcing me to transfer to a school closer to home. Thankfully, 10,000 Degrees supported me throughout my education journey, providing online resources and scholarships.
After I finish my master’s in teaching at the University of San Francisco next year, I will become an educator. Education has played such an important role in my life and now, as I come close to achieving my dreams, I wish to give back to my community by teaching in one of the Roseland schools that gave me so many opportunities in my life.
My parents immigrated here for us to have a better life and education. They did not have the opportunity to pursue education, but I did—and they pushed and motivated me to succeed. Now I am proud to be accomplishing my parents’ dreams. Being a first-generation student has also inspired my sisters, who look up to me and ask me about school and different careers they wish to pursue. Now they know they can do it too.”
