Education allows people to be presented with ideas they might not be comfortable with or ideas they did not grow up with. Education allows people to challenge themselves, to think critically, and to think outside the box. My education was a stepping stone to something bigger than I could ever imagine, and now I use that to give back not only to my family, but to my community.
For me, being able to join the San Francisco Advisory Board was important because I get to show other Latinos that you don’t have to just work for non-profit organizations, you can also sit on their boards and offer your voice and perspective. I’m very passionate about educational equity and making sure that the next generation of leaders are representative of the communities that we come from. I think it’s critically important for us to not only sit and engage with these boards, but also to ensure that these boards reflect the community that they are trying to serve.
