Black Student Engagement Internship
As an intern, you’ll champion our mission, play a vital role in boosting Black Student engagement with 10,000 Degrees, support Black Scholars through college, and foster inclusive communities on your campus to bring students of color together and raise awareness of 10,000 Degrees resources.
Interns will:
Provide near-peer mentorship to Black Scholars
Work to foster supportive communities for students of color on their college campuses
Occasionally work with local high school students to support the next generation of Black Scholars in achieving their higher education goals
Participate in trainings and other professional development opportunities that teach leadership, communication and career skills

Leadership and Communication: As part of your professional development training, you will learn skills to effectively facilitate meeting spaces and engage with other professionals. These transferable skills are extremely valuable in today’s job market and will help you progress toward your career goals.
Public Speaking: We may ask you to serve on student panels or present to high school students, with training provided for public speaking and meeting facilitation. You’ll also have networking opportunities with professionals at special events.

Stipend: You will receive a $1,000 stipend per semester!
What to expect:
For the academic calendar year in which you sign up, you may be asked to fulfill your role as a 10,000 Degrees Black Student Engagement Intern in one or more of the following ways:
Peer-Support
Support your peers on campus by creating inclusive spaces for students to stay connected and informed! You’ll organize frequent cohort bonding events for 10,000 Degrees scholars on your campus to foster a space that keeps our students of color connected, and informed about our programs and resources. You’ll also support and encourage local high school students in navigating the college-going process.
Representation & Advocacy
Represent 10,000 Degrees and serve as an advocate for students of color, connecting them to support services and other 10,000 Degrees college Access and Success programs! This position requires advanced communication skills to connect with a diverse population of students, families, and staff from different cultures and backgrounds. We may ask you to represent 10,000 Degrees at events, such as student panels or high school visits. You’ll connect and advocate for students of color, who often face many barriers to educational opportunities and experience more challenges in college.
Professional Development
Learn from 10,000 Degrees Leadership and gain new skills! You’ll attend regular training sessions led by Program Directors and Managers to enhance your skills in written & oral communication, leadership, group facilitation, event planning, and budgeting. You will also have the opportunity to join organization-wide training and coaching sessions, network with professionals within the 10,000 Degrees network, and access resources to support your own college journey.

Who is eligible to apply?
- Full time student status
- 10,000 Degrees scholarship recipient
- 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year college student

How many hours per week will I be required to work?
Interns will be required to work approximately 4 – 6 hours per week.
Is this a paid position?
Interns will be paid a $1,000 stipend per semester.
When would I start working?
Students who are selected as Interns will begin onboarding and training in October 2024, and on a rolling basis thereafter. Once students have completed the onboarding and training process they will begin working with students.
Is this an in-person, remote, or hybrid position?
This is a hybrid position. Most of the work will be performed remotely, but there may be some instances where you will work in-person with other interns and the Director of Black Student Engagement. If there is any work-related travel, interns will be reimbursed for mileage/travel expenses.
How long would the time commitment be?
Interns should plan on committing to this position for the full 2024-2025 academic school year from approximately October 2024 – June 2025.
What job duties would I be responsible for?
Interns will be responsible for the following:
- Establish a cohort of 10,000 Degrees scholars on college campuses.
- Host a 1 hour meet up for all scholars at least once per week.
- Refer scholars to the appropriate 10,000 Degrees Fellow.
- Serve as a representative and advocate for our organization at special events.
- Visit local high schools as necessary to promote and support 10,000 Degrees Access programing.
- Manage 10,000 Degrees Ambassador social media accounts.
- Participate in 10,000 Degrees trainings and events as necessary.

- Are active on their college campus (clubs, community resource centers, athletics, etc).
Do I have to attend a school in the Bay Area to be eligible for the internship?
No. We are building a team of interns that will support our programs in all regions. Students who attend schools outside of the Bay Area or in Utah are strongly encouraged to apply.
